& 23rd Commandant of the United States Coast Guard
Thad Allen retired from the Coast Guard in 2010 as the 23rd Commandant. He currently serves as Senior Executive Advisor at Booz Allen Hamilton where he supports government and commercial clients in cyber security, energy and the environment, navigation systems, emergency response, and crisis leadership. He is a nationally recognized expert in disaster response and an advisor to government leaders on creating unity of effort and governing structures to address complex problems.
He was the lead federal official for the responses to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and served as National Incident Commander for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. He also directed Coast Guard operations in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and the Haitian Earthquake. He recently served on an independent panel that evaluated the Department of Health and Human Services’ response to the Ebola outbreak. During his tenure as Commandant he personally led the transformation of the Coast Guard across a broad set of functions from maintenance and supply chain management to improved force readiness and major systems acquisitions.
A 1971 graduate of the Coast Guard Academy, Admiral Allen also holds Master Degrees from The George Washington University and MIT Sloan School. He has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees from The George Washington University, George Mason University, Georgetown University, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the National Defense University, and the National Graduate School.
He is a member of the Board of Visitors to the National Intelligence University, serves as an Executive Advisor to the Director of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, and serves on the Homeland Security Advisory Committee. He is a member in the Council on Foreign Relations and a Fellow in the National Academy of Public Administration. He holds the James Tyler Chair at the Admiral James M. Loy Institute for Leadership at the Coast Guard Academy. As Commandant he served as the Chairman for the Combined Federal Campaign for the National Capitol Region and was instrumental in raising $180 million over a three-year tenure for charitable organizations.
Admiral Allen currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Partnership for Public Service, a not for profit organization leading the “Ready to Govern” program intended to facilitate and improve the transition of Presidential administrations.
